Brixton Village Idiots

Idiots the Seventh - 10th April 2010

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Wow, what a show! We were rejoined by Michael (from Idiots the 6th) and Jude (from Idiots the 1st) together with a new member, the fantastic Shaz!

Shazz, Jude and I had spent the last week on an advanced improvisation workshop in Denmark, focusing on mask use, so we were stoked to give this a go. Terrific. This week’s theme at Brixton Village was fashion, so we improvised to order:

  • a “dress to impress” date scene (using our photomasks)
  • A fashion expert interview - the audience decided he worked in the material Soap and catered for Chihuahuas, so we had to justify exactly that! Poor Percy, my little pet trapped in a soap bubble and floating to his doom…
  • A fashion catwalk, where the designer was angered by one colour and aroused by another
  • A musical around waiting for a bus
  • (entirely non-theme related) a maniac scene about shark attacks in the aquarium, where each improviser got the chance to tag each other out and step into their shoes
Wickedly fun. Good to be back, Brixton Village! A note for you all - you can follow what’s going on in this unique space on Twitter via the hashtag #brixvill, or follow the user @brixvillidiots to see what we’re up to next!
You may have noticed there was little detail on our 6th outing - this was my bad, I was out of the country and hoping for some photos from the illustrious @ashfinch_ and @h0neym0nster - but sadly, their stint at the market is over. They will be missed. @andybroomfield is stepping into the breach, and I’m hoping we’ll get some photos for the day, and maybe even some video, sometime soon.

We’re scattered upon brixton again for a post-Easter extravaganza of song and fashion. We’ll be on at 4.30, and possibly earlier in the afternoon too. come along!

Upcoming - Saturday 13th March

This coming Saturday will see a double bill of fun at Brixton Village.

11-12 Alex Idiot will be running a workshop for all comers, those without improv experience most especially welcome. This is really just a chance to play, mess around and laugh for an hour (or portions thereof) - what’s not to love?

The Idiots will then Assemble! for a show kicking off at 13.30 or thereabouts.

Both will be within the market, exact units tbc for the a.m., the Open Stage unit for the show. Map details below.

See you there!

Idiots the fourth - 27th February

This week the idiots - well, Alex - teamed up with artinavan and spacemakers to promote ‘February’s Got Flavour’ at the Granville Arcade (the historic name for the Brixton Village project).

We took to the streets armed with the choicest morsels that the Village has to offer, to let the local residents see what they’ve been missing!

Falafel frenzy - can Alex retain that composure?

Theyre going fast...

They're going

We gathered falafel from the olive tree, and various delicacies from Cornercopia. These went down very well, as these photos attest….

Happy Brixton man!

Happy Brixton man!

A well-fed Brixtonian is a happy Brixtonian. That’s the credo I live by.

We were also supplied some delicious mussels by Etta’s seafood restaurant - you can see a punter sampling these below. Now, I have a request: regard the charming French waiter with the bird-poo (sorry, salt and pepper) moustache in the photo below. I’ve been trying to ascertain his identity to thank him more thoroughly, but, like Zorro or the Scarlet Pimpernel, he seems to operate under a cloak of anonymity. If you have any clues, please post them as comments. Failing that:

Alphonse, wherever you are, bon nuit, mon sauveur gallant .

Idiots the third - 20th February

This Saturday we were kindly invited by artinavan to play in their unit as part of their two weeks at grandma’s.

James, Ed and Alex braved the wallpaper for a trio of performances over the afternoon within this unique space. We began with an audience-driven format where letters ‘posted’ into the house broke routines and clicked things into action.

It was an interesting technique but needs development and some structure, so for parts two and three we dug into the improv repertoire for a series of games - Boris, QVC, and some memorable expert interviews.

James and Ed should know that an audience member wrote me that she “will now think of squirrels every time I put on those boots”

It was a great day! Although a little too much for some.

Those saucy villagers! They wanted some romance and by god they got it. With the inestimable Louise Scodie on board to press-gang the unwary, we were soon underway with a Valentine’s Vent - a speed date with a dollop of hate.

Louise then launched into her best Cilla impression with our slightly surreal Blind Date.
Actually, slightly surreal doesn’t begin to cut it. Our first contestant had to select between the richest - and cruellest - man in Britain and the guy that nerds bully for lunch money. Round two saw an extremely game young volunteer taking the pick between a country-loving Internashional Housh DJ and an old man with a terrible, bizarre secret. Ed and Alex tugged at our heart strings, forelocks, and nether regions, as they plumbed the depths of desire and denial.

We’ll leave you with the words of our charming host:
“I got up today never expecting I’d be bellowing ‘nazi synthesizer’ through a megaphone at a tenyearold with a child translator.”

Idiots the first - 30th January

The Idiots made their debut with some street improv as part of Brixton Village’s All the Market’s a Stage event.

Sanjay rolls them up

Sanjay rolls them up

This saw a plethora of perfomers - Sanjay, Ed, Alex, Amanda, Jude, Lucas and even little Eli - taking to the very corridors of the market itself to bring comedy to the people.

  • Employees at fishmongers Dagon’s Ltd were amazed to find themselves showcased in the investment contest Dagon’s Den!
  • A high energy mask cavalcade through the arcade, finishing in a bundle in a photo booth!
  • A grand tour of “True Brixton Market” - finding the secret history of each of the market units, painstakingly recreated by our improv researchers!
